Course Description
This workshop provides early years professionals with a foundational understanding of active supervision, health and safety responsibilities, incident management, and family communication within licensed childcare environments. The workshop emphasizes that supervision is an ongoing professional responsibility requiring educators to remain attentive, engaged, informed, and responsive throughout the day.
Participants will explore how classroom ratios, reduced ratios, staffing arrangements, and teamwork contribute to maintaining safe environments. The workshop introduces practical active-supervision strategies, including completing head counts, counting aloud with team members, checking attendance records, continuously scanning the environment, identifying blind spots, and adjusting educator positioning as children move between areas.
The workshop also examines supervision during transitions and outdoor play. Participants will learn how to follow playground schedules and capacity requirements, monitor entrances and exits, prevent children from different groups from becoming mixed, and ensure that educators providing classroom coverage understand the current number of children and their supervision responsibilities.
Participants will review expectations for documenting incidents and accidents, including completing detailed reports even when no visible injury is present, preparing individual reports for each child involved, and ensuring all team members understand what occurred. Practical guidance is also provided for communicating with families in a factual, diplomatic, and reassuring manner and involving the supervisor when additional support is needed.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a stronger understanding of how active supervision, strategic positioning, accurate head counts, teamwork, detailed documentation, and professional family communication work together to protect children’s health, safety, and well-being.
