Course Description

This professional development workshop provides participants with a foundational understanding of effective communication, relationship-building, and family engagement within early learning and childcare environments. The workshop introduces participants to the essential communication practices and professional responsibilities that support respectful, collaborative, and trusting relationships between educators and families.

Participants will explore the importance of recognizing families as experts on their children while understanding the educator’s role as a knowledgeable early-years professional. The workshop emphasizes that children experience the greatest support when families and educators communicate openly, share information, respect one another’s perspectives, and work together toward common developmental and learning goals.

The course provides practical guidance on managing family expectations, asking thoughtful questions, listening actively, sharing classroom information, and responding calmly and positively during everyday interactions. Participants will also learn the importance of documenting family comments, instructions, concerns, complaints, resolutions, and follow-up communication through detailed communication logs and appropriate messaging systems.

Participants will be introduced to a structured conflict-resolution model and practical strategies for responding professionally to parent concerns and complaints. A significant focus is placed on meaningful family engagement beyond daily conversations. Participants will explore ways to invite family contributions into classroom programming, connect classroom learning with children’s home experiences, share educational resources and activity ideas, and create opportunities for families to continue learning at home.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a stronger understanding of how thoughtful communication, accurate documentation, conflict resolution, and meaningful engagement contribute to positive educator-family relationships. Participants will recognize that interacting with families is not simply an exchange of information, but an ongoing professional partnership that strengthens consistency between home and childcare and supports each child’s learning, development, identity, and well-being.
