Course Description
This workshop provides early years professionals with a foundational understanding of challenging behaviours, responsive behaviour guidance, health and safety practices, supervision requirements, and professional decision-making within early learning environments.
Participants will be introduced to the developmental, environmental, social-emotional, and neurological factors that influence children's behaviour. The workshop explores how behaviours often serve as a form of communication and examines common contributors to behavioural challenges, including stress responses, communication difficulties, sensory needs, disrupted routines, unmet developmental needs, and relationship-based factors. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of how responsive, relationship-based approaches can support children's self-regulation, emotional development, and positive social interactions.
The workshop also introduces participants to behaviour guidance strategies that promote emotional expression, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and positive peer relationships. Participants will explore the importance of creating supportive environments that encourage success and learn how proactive approaches such as environmental design, predictable routines, sensory supports, and individualized planning can help prevent behavioural escalation while maintaining children's dignity and sense of belonging.
The workshop also introduces participants to the four core pillars of professional practice: Observe, Plan, Act, and Reflect (OPAR). These foundational concepts help educators develop reflective, intentional approaches to supporting children's learning, behaviour, health, and well-being. Participants will explore how observation, planning, implementation, and reflection contribute to effective professional practice and continuous improvement.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a strong foundational understanding of behaviour guidance, health and safety, supervision, sanitation, and reflective practice that will support their success throughout the remainder of the training program and within their professional roles.
