Course Description

This workshop provides participants with a foundational understanding of how to plan and facilitate meaningful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate circle-time experiences within early learning environments. The workshop introduces circle time as an opportunity for children to learn together, develop a sense of classroom community, and strengthen their social, communication, language, cognitive, and physical skills.

Participants will explore the role of circle time within a balanced daily program that includes individual, small-group, and whole-group learning experiences. The workshop provides guidance on establishing a consistent circle-time routine, selecting an appropriate time and duration, organizing materials, collaborating with classroom team members, and gradually extending the experience according to the children’s ages, attention spans, interests, and developmental readiness.

The workshop emphasizes inclusive participation and recognizes that children communicate their engagement in different ways. Participants will learn how to invite children to contribute at a level that feels comfortable to them through choices, conversations, movement, songs, stories, games, props, name cards, classroom responsibilities, and project-related activities. Participants will also explore how circle time can support belonging, diversity, intercultural understanding, classroom expectations, and respectful discussions about families, cultures, similarities, and differences.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a stronger understanding of how to create circle-time experiences that are purposeful, flexible, inclusive, and responsive to children’s needs. Participants will recognize that effective circle time is not simply about gathering children together, but about creating an interactive learning experience where every child is invited to communicate, move, explore, contribute, and experience a sense of belonging within the classroom community.
